In a last minute decision Nic and decided to head up to Hobble Creek for our anniversary weekend for a little bucket list fishing and some time doing what we love - hanging out together.
It was pretty spectacular, but the fishing was really poor. Anglers (I do not consider myself one of their type. I am like an assistant to the angler - or witness) do not like people to reveal their best fishing spots. However I don't think Nic will mind that I posted this one. We saw a total of 2 fish. They were brown trout. If you know anything about fishing, you know this is not okay.
Instead we hiked around looking for fish. Hiking is the best part of fishing, in my opinion. So I thought our trip was great. Nic was a little disappointed. He poured over some maps and considered may possibilities and theorized about the location of the fish - which he assured must be there. Based on this, I am pretty sure that we will back to this lake and this creek to see if we can crack the case.
After all of the glorious wildlife, landscape, and flowers in Costa Rica coming home to see the beauty in my own backyard was a very powerful experience. Most of the time I think of Wyoming as the wasteland that is the I-80, but in reality Wyoming is a remarkably beautiful place.
We arrived Wednesday night and had the whole camp to ourselves, sharing only with this sweet little deer. Thursday morning over coffee the weekend warriors rolled in with 20 trucks from Utah. That was a little disappointing, but you can see why they would want to come.
I did forget to pack my sleeping bag which resulted in Nic sharing his with me and us sleeping under some dog blankets. That was less than ideal. But Nic and I travel well together, even in adversity.
Lake Alice
The lake was crystal clear and ice cold. It was created by a rockslide thousands of years ago, so it is a pretty pristine lake. To get there one must hike up a mile and half. The trail around the lake is longer than we wanted to hike. We made it four miles out and then had to hike back and we did not even get close to the end of the lake. Nic had hoped the good fishing was at the end of the lake. I am skeptical that fish live here at all.

And then suddenly it was this creek!
Nature is amazing.
This creek had lots of beaver dams and lodges. It was fun to see these little guys hard at work.
Hobble Creek
I took a break from fishing and stared at the clouds and did a little meditating. It was pretty perfect.
Because Nic and I camp fairly regularly in bear country we felt it would be a good idea to practice using our bear spray with some of our expired bottles. It was pretty impressive. But I am not 100% convinced of the efficacy of bear spray. It seems rather weather dependent and imagine if the bear and the wind were not in the right direction? It seems like it could be bad.
We waited until right before we left when were filthy, exhausted, and totally gross for our selfie together. It proves he does love me. Because I am a mess - in more than one way.
