Miami, Day 1

Somewhere in between the Orlando-ish area of Florida and Miami, Nic became a grandad. In true form for Nic and his family, his grandson was born on Pii day. I guess science and math run in the blood.

He also found out that he likely did not have a job anymore. The Federal government has been hacking away at jobs, and Nic's has been a casualty of those cuts.

Life is bitter-sweet.

Our Airbnb in Little Havana, in Miami was very cute. I tried to snap a few photos to capture its vibe.

March 15th dawned early with an Uber driver ready to escort us to downtown Miami, where we (read Paddy and Catroina) booked us a tour of Miami. Our Uber driver gave us the lowdown on Miami:

There are no homeless people in Miami because President Trump sent them to all of the Blue States. Florida is great, it is even greater because of Trump, and because of no homeless. Uber Driver also told us that all Irish and Scottish people look alike. He can't tell them apart because they are all white and talk funny. Mr. Uber Driver would also like all concert goers to go elsewhere. They are dirty and loud - no the kind of people Florida wants.

It was an intense conversation. It definitely made an impression.

Thankfully, Mr. Uber Driver was soon replaced with our tour guides, Alex and Chanti. They pointed us to the boat where we saw a lot of the Miami skyline, and a lot of cruise ships, and even more rich people's houses.

The weather was perfect - like absolutely, completely perfect. Not hot, not cold, not breezy - perfect. Nic tried to turn on a water tap to lure manatees over, but we dissuaded him.

After a quick and delicious lunch, we hopped in the van with Alex and he drove us all around Miami. I took a little nap, and we saw lots of fancy things.

Catroina and I are really working on taking good pictures in the style of Helen.

Miami Beach was on the list, but there was some fancy thing happening there, so we only had a brief pause there to admire the creative lifeguard stations.

My favorite part of the tour was the Wynwood neighborhood. There was so much beautiful street art there, it was hard to even believe. Alex, the tour guide, is friends with the owner of this establishment, which used to be/is a film studio or something? Anyway, we got a little tour. It was a fun little place.

Meet Alex, he has a tattoo that matches the mural.

While I thought this little stop was pretty cool, I definitely hope that the owner of this little spot goes on ahead and invests in some therapy. He definitely has some issues with women. That is all I am going to say about that.

Our tour wrapped up in Little Havana, and Alex kindly dropped us back at home, after, of course, we took a peak around town. Little Havana is a lot littler than I had expected. I really wanted several more streets of it. But, you take what you can get.

The Domino Club was my highlight. Catroina had many admirers in here. If Paddy gets tired of her,  I know there is a line of takers here.

Nic perused the cigars. He doesn't smoke, and can't drink, but likes to pretend he has vices.

We ended the night in La Trova, an amazing restaurant and home to this fantastic Salsa band.

Speaking of vices. Choices were made. Not all of them were good on my part, especially considering I had my first race since I broke my hip the next morning.

I will defend them by saying they felt good at the time.

After our tour we enjoyed a wonderful dinner, and some amazing Salsa music. Paddy and Catroina are amazing at finding the best spots to see. I don't think Nic and I would have seen half of what we

Five Fab Days in Florida - Tampa

Let me preface this post/trip with this disclaimer: We are not Florida people. (Nothing against Florida people. I know some Florida people and I love them. I just have a complicated relationship with Florida). We are, however, Scottish people. When we learned the Scots would be in Florida this spring, we made the decision to go to Florida. I had never been, and Nic had not been for years and years. So, another adventure was in store for us. Nic and I awoke early (WAY early) on Wednesday morning to catch a flight to Tampa, where we planned to meet up with our Scottish family for five fab days of Florida.  Things at work have been hard for both of us, so we came to this holiday so ready to relax, and very thankful that Paddy is an excellent trip planner. We travelled from Tampa to Kissimmee, where their daughter was playing tennis. Our afternoon was spent lying by the pool, soaking up the sun, and quickly catching up. We planned to pop down to Cocoa Beach to see the launches. Paddy h...

The Blind Leading the Blind Tour ~ June 2026 ~ Coming Soon

Who : This gang (minus my dad, who has informed us he is never leaving the country again).  Only my sister does not have r etinitis pigmentosa , and my dad, who is not going.  Not to disparage my in-laws, Jennie, Sharon, Scott, Mae, and my husband, Nic, are all coming, too. They can all see, too. It just sounds more dramatic to tell you the blind people are going. It seems anti-climatic to include people who can see. Still, the blind are almost the majority. When : June 2026 Where : Paris, France Why : Because we have to go while we can still see. This is the first official post of The Blind Leading the Blind Tour because although we have been dreaming about this,   WE ARE OFFICIALLY GOING. Consider this the official announcement of The Blind Leading The Blind Tour. Included in this trip are seven full days with this cast of characters (minus Dad) and their better halves. Nic and I will have a Side Quest. Each of my siblings will have their own side quests, bu...

2026 ~ Word of the Year

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” –Desmond Tutu In my annual tradition of choosing a word for the year, I found myself this morning reflecting on last year's word: Well . Unfortunately, last year (yesterday and the 364 yesterdays before that) was a bit of a train wreck.  In a brief review and update of some of the goals and ambitions I put forth last January: We did not go to Vietnam or Alaska. Neither of those were real goals, more manifestations for the future.  We did focus on the house. We updated my office, installed new HVAC for the house, painted the living room, and we are in the process of redoing the downstairs bathroom to practice for the upstairs bathroom. When I say, 'we,' I mean Nic. I have stood by and nodded throughout these projects and consulted on colors. Nic has done all of the work. I worked hard on getting back to running my usual mileage. I improved my overall health. I am proud of the work I have done physicall...
